Volunteer Opportunities

London Heritage Farm is owned by the City of Richmond and operated by the London Heritage Farm Society with the help and support of members who are committed to volunteering.

The London Heritage Farm Society includes members with a wide variety of interests and skills. If you are interested in volunteering and being a member of London Heritage Farm Society, please complete the Contact Form in our Membership page and click "Submit".

Following are the volunteer opportunities in London Heritage Farm's on-going activities (activities that occur throughout the year) and special events and projects (one- or two-day events or short-term projects).

Ongoing Activities

Cataloguing/Accessions: The process of cataloguing artifacts at London Heritage Farm is on-going and requires constant attention. Volunteer opportunities in this area not only include cataloguing but also sitting on the Collections (Accessions) Committee.

Clean-up Work Party:
Work parties are held after big events, weddings, winter storms and summer sun to clear up, clean up and keep London Farm looking its best! Putting away tables, chairs and canopies, weeding, fixing fences, sweeping floors, and cutting back invasive species are just a few of the jobs that these volunteers undertake.

Equipment Restoration: If you have a knack with restoring and maintaining machinery then this is the volunteer opportunity for you! All types of equipment from cart wheels to sewing machines require restoration.

Event Coordinator: Do you have the gift of event planning and organization? Then, perhaps you’d like to coordinate one of the yearly special events or a one-off event for the London Heritage Farm Society.

Flower Gardens: The Heritage Gardens to the east of the farmhouse have been planned and planted and are maintained by gardening volunteers. If you love herb and flower gardens, then give us a call!

Guided Tours: Tours of the farmhouse and its surrounding buildings, attractions and park are offered to the public on an on-going basis, both during regular opening hours and during the week for special groups (such as school children, ESL groups, seniors groups and care homes). Training is provided but being comfortable about speaking in front of a small group is an asset.

Membership: New members are welcomed throughout the year and so the need for keeping in contact with our membership and inviting new people to join the Society is ongoing too. If you are out-going and social and like to meet new people then this may be the area for you.

Pond Restoration: Started in the year 2000, this restoration project aims to bring back the pond to its original size and depth and to maintain an environment for the propagation of small fish, frogs, and other aquatic creatures. Restoration started in March 2009 and is on-going.

Publicity: Special events are put on by the London Heritage Farm Society year round and so the need for advertising these activities and the work of the Society is a vital one! If you can design posters and flyers or like to walk and can take publicity items out into the community then give us a call.

Tea Room: The Tea Room is one of the primary fundraising activities of the London Heritage Farm Society and assistance in serving food and beverages to the public is needed on a regular basis. Please note that people without FoodSafe certification cannot handle food or beverages but help in washing dishes, clearing tables and making tea bags is just as essential.

Special Events and Projects

Annual Plant Sale: Volunteers are needed to help plan, set up, take down and run this annual event, which is usually held in May. All proceeds from the sale go to maintain and improve the Heritage Gardens at London Farm.

Antique and Collectibles Sale: Once or twice a year, London Farm hosts a fair for lovers of things old and fascinating. Volunteers are needed to help plan, set up, take down and help out on the day of these events.

Christmas: Christmas at London Farm usually begins in mid November with decorating the house, inside and out, for the Christmas season, serving special Christmas goodies in the tea room and a special expanded gift shop. If you love an old-fashioned flavor to your Christmas then please join us.

Events Food Booth: Several events, such as Family Farm Fair and the Antique and Collectible Fairs involve food booths. Volunteers are needed to help plan, set up, take down and help out at the food booths on the day of these events.

Family Farm Fair: This annual family event is the biggest event of the year, with something for every member of the family! Volunteers can help out by helping to plan the event, volunteering on the day or helping to clean up afterward. This fun-filled event is very popular.
